John Street (1932 - 2009)
7th January 2009
John Street, one of the sport's most recognisable figures, passed away at
hospital in Exeter yesterday three days after his 77th birthday. He had
been suffering from lung disease.
He refereed many high-profile televised matches during the 1980's and
1990's, including five world finals, Jimmy White's maximum break at the
1992 world championship, and the extraordinary final of the 1997 Masters
(his final match) when Steve Davis came back from a 4-8 deficit to Ronnie
O'Sullivan to win the title 10-8 (despite the infamous appearance of a
female streaker!).
Known as a leading authority on the rules
of snooker - a subject on which he co-authored a book and wrote popular
columns in Pot Black and CueSport magazines - he was highly respected by
all the players as one of the games top officials. |

Premier League Snooker - O'Sullivan wins
eighth title
7th December 2008
Ronnie O'Sullivan won his 8th Premier League title (5th in succession)
after completing a 7-2 victory over Leicester's Mark Selby. During some
comparatively scrappy periods of play, O'Sullivan's B-game was enough to
claim his 42nd professional title as Selby failed to fire - in stark
contrast to his sensational three consecutive centuries and a 70+ in
blitzing Stephen Hendry in last night's semi-final. The Rocket, however,
did find some form and managed runs of 93, 62, 83, 62, 105, and 74 on his
way to picking up the £50,000 winners cheque plus £25,000 amassed during
the League phase. Selby, whose top break was a solitary 84, received
£25,000 as runner-up and a further £29,000 for his unbeaten, table-topping
performance in the round robin section.

Paul Medati (1944 - 2008)
30th November 2008
Paul Medati, a professional snooker player from 1981 to 1995, passed away
yesterday at the age of 64 after a six month battle with cancer. With a
best world ranking of 57, he had beaten many of the games top names during
snooker's boom years in the 1980's.
However, he is probably best remembered for
an altercation with Alex Higgins, who turned up at the 1986 Mercantile
Classic with cuts and bruises, claiming to the press that he had fallen
from a horse! The story made front page headlines of The Sun
and even ITN's News At Ten. Despite this, both men still remained
friends.
In recent years, Medati has competed on
the British nine-ball pool circuit.
He is remembered as a true gentleman
by all and will be greatly missed by the cue sport community.
EDIT (14th December 2008): A tearful
Tony Drago dedicated Europe's 11-5 victory over the USA in the
Mosconi Cup to
Medati, describing him as "a dear friend." |
