Roberto Luongo came out on top in his busiest night of the season, yet the goalie duel everyone expected against Henrik Lundqvist never materialized. Alex Burrows scored two of Vancouver's five goals against Lundqvist, and the Canucks feasted on turnovers Wednesday night in a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers.
Alex Ovechkin is dangerous enough when the Washington Capitals are at even strength. Having him on the power play is tantamount to piling on. The reigning NHL MVP scored with the man advantage to extend his goal streak to five games and added three assists, sending the Capitals to a 6-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night.
A slow start did not stop the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. The Bruins overcame an early 4-2 deficit to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 7-4. It was Boston's sixth straight win at home. Zdeno Chara and Chuck Kobasew each scored two goals, Marc Savard had a goal and three assists to lead the Bruins. "We got ourselves in trouble early and that is uncharacteristic of our team to give up those kinds of...
Sens Fs Fisher, Neil out several weeks (AP)
Forwards Mike Fisher and Chris Neil each will be out of the slumping Ottawa Senators lineup for several weeks because of injuries. Fisher, a center, strained a ligament in his right knee during a shootout loss to the New York Rangers on Monday night, the Senators fifth straight loss that dropped them to last place in the Eastern Conference.
The Florida Panthers are finding ways to win. The same can't be said for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bryan McCabe scored twice in regulation and Nathan Horton had the lone goal in a shootout for the Panthers, who beat Tampa Bay 4-3 on Tuesday night. Tomas Vokoun made 49 saves, and David Booth added a goal for Florida, which has won three of four following a six-game losing streak.
Overtime a normal shift for Penguins (AP)
If there's anything Pittsburgh Penguins fans are learning this season, it's to not leave during the third period. Ever. Their season isn't a quarter over yet, and already the Penguins (11-4-3) are playing overtime games at a remarkable pace. Half of their 18 games have gone to overtime, with Pittsburgh owning a 6-3 record.
The punchless Carolina Hurricanes kept peppering Carey Price, and got a couple of pucks past the Montreal goalie just in time. Sergei Samsonov and Ray Whitney scored 3 1/2 minutes apart in the third period, and Carolina put a season-high 48 shots on net in its come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Canadiens on Tuesday night.
The Calgary Flames were determined to find a way to turn around their rough November, no matter how hard Peter Budaj made it for them. The Flames overcame a 47-save performance by Budaj and earned a 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night. Calgary, which improved to 4-5 in November, had lost five of seven before Tuesday -- including an embarrassing 6-1 defeat in San Jose last week.
The Chicago Blackhawks' annual circus trip got off to a wild start. Nikolai Khabibulin made 36 saves through overtime, then stopped two shots in the shootout as the Blackhawks edged the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 Tuesday night. "It was nice to start the road trip with a win," Khabibulin said. "Any time you can start a long road trip with a win, that's a good thing." The victory was the Blackhawks' first in...
Blue Jackets put D Klesla on IR (AP)
The Columbus Blue Jackets placed defenseman Rostislav Klesla on injured reserve on Wednesday because of an ankle injury. Klesla has missed the last two games and will likely miss at least one more with what coach Ken Hitchcock called a high ankle sprain he sustained in Friday's 6-1 win at Buffalo. A player on IR is ineligible to compete in games for at least a week.
